First try all the fixes for regular machines.
If they don't fix your problem try this:

You likely have one of two problems (or both?).

1. Punkbuster failed to update itself.
If this is the case, click here for instructions to update it manually.

2. You have a multi-core computer and it's giving Punkbuster fits.
Punkbuster was coded by roaches with diarrhea. You have to forgive them if their stuff doesn't always work. To fix the multi-core problem just download this little program that sets your affinity at startup.

Unzip it into your "c:\windows" folder.
Now RIGHT CLICK on your BF2 shortcut on the desktop and
choose Properties.
In the target area where it says "C:\Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield2"etc.
select all that and delete it.
Paste this line in there instead.

C:\WINDOWS\prioaff.exe 3 10 "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 /prefetch:1

Of course you'll need to change the path if you installed BF2 to drive D, E, F, or your
floppy drive.
Now when you doubleclick the link BF2 will only use 1 processor, the empty one!
And at realtime priority
Extra stuff:
To use different priorities change the number following the exe.
0 = Idle
1 = low
2 = normal
3 = realtime
Eg: C:\WINDOWS\prioaff.exe 0 ( would run idle priority )
To pick what cpu / core it runs on change the 2nd number after the exe.
01 = run on cpu 0 with Windows (not recommended!)
10 = run on cpu 1

For 2142, try running the program in compatibility mode for Windows 2000.
